Psychological research

In brief

Psychological assessment helps shed light on your symptoms, thought patterns, personality, and functioning. It forms the basis for appropriate treatment recommendations. At Synthese , we Synthese psychological assessment in a targeted manner, tailored to your specific needs.

What is psychological research?

Psychological testing is part of the diagnostic process. It helps us to:

  • To understand your complaints more precisely

  • Identifying the causes and perpetuating factors

  • Gaining insight into personality traits, thinking styles, or cognitive functions

  • Determining which treatment is best suited to your situation

This assessment consists of interviews, questionnaires, and sometimes test assignments. We look not only at what is going wrong, but also at what you are doing well, where your strengths lie, and how you deal with difficulties.

Assessments at Synthese conducted to support your treatment. You and your therapist will discuss the need for an assessment to proceed with treatment. Depending on the specific issues, an assessment may include: a medical history interview, questionnaires, interviews, and tests. For larger assessments, the process is spread over several half-days. After the assessment is completed, a detailed discussion will take place to review the results with you; a comprehensive report will also be provided. Because the assessments are conducted to support your treatment, they are fully covered by your health insurance provider. For more information about coverage, please visit the coverage page.

When do we conduct psychological research?

Psychological testing is used as:

  • The nature of your symptoms is not yet entirely clear.

  • Previous treatments did not yield sufficient results

  • There are suspicions of developmental problems (such as ADHD or ASD).

  • There are long-term or complex complaints

  • You may benefit from a broader view of your functioning (e.g., in the case of personality issues).

Our goal is to investigate treatment options and gain the best possible understanding of what is happening with the patient. During these investigations, we look for both the nature and severity of the problems. What psychiatric disorders are present and how can a patient and their loved ones best deal with them?

Types of Psychodiagnostic Testing:

  • Intelligence testing;
  • Neuropsychological assessment: an examination of various psychological functions such as concentration, memory, planning, social insight, learning speed, and practical skills;
  • Personality assessment: an assessment of strong and weak personality traits and the ability to cope with stress;
  • Specific psychiatric conditions: an investigation into, for example, ADHD, autism, psychosis, trauma, depression, and anxiety disorders.

What is the process for psychological testing at Synthese?

  1. intake interview Together with your practitioner, you will discuss your symptoms and the reason for the examination.

  2. Research Plan Your practitioner will draw up a research plan. This consists of interviews, digital questionnaires, and possibly specific tests (e.g., personality, trauma, mood, intelligence).

  3. assessment and analysis You complete the questionnaires and carry out the assignments. We then analyze the results in combination with the clinical picture and medical history.

  4. Discussion of the results
    The results will be discussed with you in understandable language. You will gain insight into how your symptoms relate to your thinking style, emotion regulation, history, and coping strategies.

  5. advice and treatment proposal Based on the examination, we advise on the most appropriate treatment and which forms of treatment will be most effective.
